Jeremiah 18:1–6

At the Potter's House

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

One day God said to Jeremiah, “Go down to the potter’s house. I have something to show you there.” So Jeremiah walked down the hill to the potter’s shop.

The potter sat at his spinning wheel. Whirr, whirr, whirr! His wet hands shaped a lump of soft clay into a pot. Jeremiah watched closely.

But uh-oh! The pot went lumpy and crooked. It was not turning out right. What would the potter do now? Would he throw the clay away?

No! The potter squished the clay into a ball. Squish, squash! Then he started again. Whirr, whirr! This time he made a new pot, smooth and beautiful.

God said, “Jeremiah, I am like that potter, and my people are like the clay. I can shape them and make them new.”

When we make mistakes, God doesn’t throw us away. He gently shapes us and makes us new. We are in God’s loving hands.

Talk about it

  • How does God help us when we make mistakes?
  • What do you think Jeremiah learned at the potter’s house?
  • Can you think of a time someone helped you try again?

Pray together

Dear God, I am like clay in your hands. Please shape me to be more like Jesus. Amen.
