Nehemiah 1–6

Nehemiah Builds the Wall

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Nehemiah served the king of Persia. His job was to bring the king his cup. One day Nehemiah heard sad news. The walls of Jerusalem were broken down, and the gates were burned.

Nehemiah sat down and cried. Then he prayed to God for many days. “Lord, please help your people. And please make the king kind to me.”

The king saw Nehemiah’s sad face. “What’s wrong?” he asked. Nehemiah said a quick prayer and told him. The king said, “Go and build the wall!”

In Jerusalem, Nehemiah got everyone to work. Each family fixed the part of the wall next to their house. Moms, dads, kids and even goldsmiths helped. Clink, clank! Stack, stack!

Some grumpy neighbors laughed at them. “That wall is so weak a fox could knock it down!” But the people kept praying and kept building.

In just fifty-two days, the wall was finished! Everyone cheered. When we pray and work together, God helps us do great things.

Talk about it

  • What could your family build or do together for God?
  • How did Nehemiah ask God for help before he worked?
  • What job could you do to help your family work together?

Pray together

Dear God, help us pray and work together to do good things. Amen.
