Acts 16:16–34

Singing in Jail

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Paul and his friend Silas were telling people about Jesus in the city of Philippi. Some angry men grabbed them and dragged them to the city leaders.

The leaders had Paul and Silas thrown into jail. The jailer locked their feet in heavy wooden blocks, deep inside the dark prison.

Were Paul and Silas grumpy? No! At midnight they prayed and sang songs to God. The other prisoners were listening.

Suddenly, rumble, rumble! A big earthquake shook the jail. All the doors flew open, and everyone’s chains fell off! But nobody ran away.

The jailer woke up and was very scared. Paul called out, “Don’t be afraid! We are all here!” The jailer fell down before them. “What must I do to be saved?”

“Believe in the Lord Jesus,” they said. That night the jailer washed their hurts and fed them. He and his whole family believed and were baptized.

Talk about it

  • What can you do when you feel sad or scared?
  • Why do you think Paul and Silas sang in the jail?
  • How did Paul help the jailer feel safe?

Pray together

Dear God, help me sing and pray to you even on hard days. Amen.
