John 5:1–15

The Pool of Bethesda

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

In Jerusalem there was a pool called Bethesda, with five covered porches. Lots of sick people lay there, hoping to get better.

One man had been sick for thirty-eight years! He could not walk. When the water stirred, he wanted to get in, but nobody would help him.

Jesus saw the man lying there. He knew the man had been waiting a very long time. Jesus walked over and knelt beside him.

“Do you want to get well?” Jesus asked. The man said, “Sir, I have no one to help me into the pool. Someone always gets there first.”

Jesus said, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” And right away the man was well. He rolled up his mat and walked!

After thirty-eight years, he could walk! Jesus sees people who feel forgotten. He sees you, and he helps you too.

Talk about it

  • Who might feel forgotten that you could help?
  • How do you think the man felt when Jesus came close to him?
  • What is one kind thing you can do for someone who is waiting?

Pray together

Dear Jesus, thank you for seeing me. Help me see people who need a friend. Amen.
