Matthew 7:24–27

The Wise and Foolish Builders

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Jesus told a story about two builders. A wise man wanted to build a house. He dug down deep until he found hard rock. Dig, dig, dig!

On top of the rock he built his house. Bang, bang went his hammer! It took a long time, but his house was strong.

A foolish man built a house too. He didn’t want to dig. “Sand is easy!” he said. So he built his house right on the soft sand.

Then the storm came. The rain came down, and the floods came up. The wind blew and blew against both houses. Whoosh! Splash!

The house on the sand went SPLAT! It fell down flat. But the house on the rock stood strong, because it was built on the rock.

Jesus said, “Everyone who hears my words and does them is like the wise builder.” When we listen to Jesus and obey, our lives are strong.

Talk about it

  • What is one thing Jesus says that you can do today?
  • Why do you think the wise builder kept digging until he found rock?
  • How can Jesus’ words help you be strong when something feels hard?

Pray together

Dear Jesus, help me listen to your words and do them, so my life is strong. Amen.
