The story
Zechariah and Elizabeth loved God very much. They were old, and they had always wanted a baby. But no baby had come. Still, they kept praying.
One day Zechariah was serving in the temple, burning sweet incense. Suddenly an angel stood beside the altar! It was Gabriel. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “God heard your prayer!”
“Elizabeth will have a son. Name him John.” Zechariah said, “How can I be sure? We are so old!” Because he didn’t believe, he could not talk until the baby came.
Just as God promised, Elizabeth had a baby boy! Friends and family came to celebrate. “Call him Zechariah, like his dad!” they said. “No,” said Elizabeth. “His name is John.”
Everyone looked at Zechariah. He still could not talk, so he asked for a writing tablet. He wrote, “His name is John.” Everyone was amazed!
Right then, Zechariah could talk again! The first thing he did was sing praises to God. God always keeps his promises, even when we have to wait.
