Exodus 1–2

A Baby in a Basket

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Many years later, God’s people, the Israelites, lived in Egypt. A new Pharaoh made them work hard as slaves. He was afraid of them, because there were so many.

Pharaoh made a cruel rule against the Israelite baby boys. But one mother had a baby boy, and she hid him to keep him safe.

When he grew too big to hide, she made a basket, snug and waterproof. She tucked him in and set it in the tall reeds by the river. Bob, bob!

His big sister, Miriam, watched from the reeds. Then Pharaoh’s daughter came down to the river. “Look! A basket!” The baby cried. Waaah!

The princess felt sorry for him. Miriam ran up. “Shall I find someone to feed the baby?” “Yes!” So Miriam brought... the baby’s own mother!

The princess named the baby Moses. God kept little Moses safe, because God had big plans for him. God takes care of me, too!

Talk about it

  • How did God keep baby Moses safe?
  • Who helped baby Moses in this story?
  • When do you need help, and who can help you?

Pray together

Thank you, God, for watching over me day and night. Amen.
