Exodus 3–4

The Bush That Didn't Burn Up

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Moses grew up and went far away to the desert. He became a shepherd. Every day he watched over the sheep. Baa, baa!

One day, near a mountain, Moses saw something strange. A bush was on fire! Crackle, crackle. But the bush did not burn up. “How odd!” said Moses.

He came closer. Then God called from the bush, “Moses! Moses! Take off your sandals. This is holy ground.” Moses hid his face.

“I have seen how my people are hurting in Egypt,” God said. “I will rescue them. Go to Pharaoh, and lead my people out.”

“Who, me?” said Moses. “I’m not good at talking!” God said, “I will be with you. I made your mouth.” And God sent his brother Aaron to help.

So Moses picked up his shepherd’s staff and headed back to Egypt. He was not alone. God goes with me, too!

Talk about it

  • When do you feel scared? Who goes with you?
  • How do you think Moses felt when he heard God call his name?
  • Who are helpers God gives you when something feels hard?

Pray together

Dear God, thank you for going with me when I feel scared. Amen.
