2 Kings 2:1–14

A Chariot of Fire

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Elijah had a helper named Elisha. Elisha loved his teacher. One day Elijah said, “Stay here.” But Elisha said, “I will not leave you!” So they walked on together.

They came to the wide Jordan River. There was no bridge and no boat. Elijah rolled up his cloak and hit the water. Splash!

The river split apart, left and right! Elijah and Elisha walked across on dry ground. “What can I do for you before I go?” asked Elijah.

“Please let me be filled with God’s Spirit like you,” said Elisha. As they walked and talked, a chariot of fire with horses of fire swooshed between them!

A whirlwind lifted Elijah up, up, up into heaven. “My father! My father!” Elisha called. Then Elijah was gone. His cloak floated down to the ground.

Elisha picked up the cloak and hit the river. Splash! The water parted again! God was with Elisha, too. God is with us wherever we go.

Talk about it

  • Who is someone who teaches you about God?
  • How do you think Elisha felt when Elijah went up to heaven?
  • Where can we remember that God is with us this week?

Pray together

Dear God, thank you for the people who teach me about you. Be with me too. Amen.
