A Gentle Whisper

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

After the big day on the mountain, Elijah was very tired and very scared. A mean queen was angry with him. So Elijah ran far away into the desert.

He lay down under a little bush. “I can’t do this anymore, God,” he said. Then he fell fast asleep. Snore, snore, snore.

Tap, tap! An angel woke him up. “Get up and eat!” Right there was warm bread and a jar of water. Elijah ate, drank and slept again. God was taking care of him.

Elijah walked to God’s mountain and rested in a cave. “Go and stand outside,” God said. “I am going to pass by.”

WHOOSH! A great wind broke the rocks. RUMBLE! An earthquake shook the ground. CRACKLE! A fire blazed. But God was not in the wind, the shaking or the fire.

Then came a gentle whisper. Elijah covered his face and stepped out. It was God! When you feel tired and scared, God is near. Listen for his quiet voice.

Talk about it

  • Where is a quiet place where you can talk to God?
  • How do you think Elijah felt when the angel brought him food and water?
  • What helps your heart feel calm when you are tired or scared?

Pray together

Dear God, when I am tired or scared, help me hear your gentle voice. Amen.
