1 Kings 18

Fire from Heaven

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

For a long time, many people forgot about God. They prayed to a pretend god named Baal instead. So brave Elijah called everyone up to Mount Carmel for a big test.

“Let’s build two altars,” said Elijah. “Don’t light the fire. Just pray. The real God will send fire from heaven!” The people of Baal went first.

They shouted and danced and hopped around all day long. “Baal, answer us!” But nobody answered. No spark. No smoke. Nothing at all.

Then Elijah built an altar with twelve stones. He poured water all over it, three times! Splash, splash, splash! The wood was soaking wet.

Elijah prayed a short, simple prayer. “Lord, show everyone that you are God.” WHOOSH! Fire fell from heaven and burned up everything, even the water!

The people fell down and said, “The Lord is God!” Then Elijah prayed again, and dark clouds rolled in. Pitter-patter! Rain came at last. God is the true God.

Talk about it

  • Why did Elijah pour water on the altar?
  • How do you think the people felt when the fire came from heaven?
  • What can we remember about God when we are unsure or waiting?

Pray together

Dear God, you are the real God. Help me to trust only you. Amen.
