Matthew 17:24–27

A Coin in a Fish

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Jesus and his friends came back to Capernaum. Some men who collected money for the temple came up to Peter. “Does your teacher pay the temple tax?” they asked.

“Yes, he does,” said Peter. But when Peter went into the house, he wondered. How would they pay? They didn’t have the money.

Before Peter could even ask, Jesus spoke up. Jesus already knew what was going on. He had a surprising plan!

“Go down to the lake,” said Jesus. “Throw out your fishing line. Open the mouth of the first fish you catch. You will find a coin.”

So Peter went fishing. Splash! He threw out his line. Tug, tug! He pulled in a fish. He opened its mouth and there was a shiny silver coin!

The coin was just enough to pay for Jesus and for Peter. Peter laughed and laughed. Jesus knows what we need, and he takes care of us.

Talk about it

  • How has God given you what you needed?
  • How do you think Peter felt when he saw the coin in the fish?
  • What is something you can ask Jesus to help you with today?

Pray together

Dear Jesus, you know what I need before I ask. Thank you for taking care of me. Amen.
