Matthew 17:1–9

Shining on the Mountain

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

One day Jesus took three friends, Peter, James and John, up a high mountain. They climbed and climbed until they were above the clouds. It was quiet and peaceful.

Jesus began to pray. Suddenly his face shone like the sun! His clothes became bright white, brighter than snow.

Peter, James and John rubbed their eyes. They had never seen anything like it. Jesus was showing them how great and glorious he really is.

Then two men from long ago appeared and talked with Jesus. It was Moses and Elijah! Peter was so excited. “Let’s build three tents!” he said.

Just then a bright cloud covered them, and a voice spoke from the cloud. “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” The friends fell to the ground.

Jesus touched them. “Get up. Don’t be afraid,” he said. When they looked up, they saw only Jesus. God wants us to listen to Jesus too.

Talk about it

  • How can you listen to Jesus every day?
  • What do you think Peter, James, and John felt when they saw Jesus shine?
  • Who can help you remember Jesus’ words when you are busy or worried?

Pray together

Dear God, Jesus is your Son. Help me listen to him every day. Amen.
