1 Kings 17

A Jar That Never Ran Out

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Elijah was God’s prophet. There had been no rain for a long time. Plants dried up. People were hungry. But God took care of Elijah.

God sent Elijah to a town called Zarephath. At the gate, he met a widow gathering sticks. “Please bring me some water and a little bread,” said Elijah.

“I have only a handful of flour and a little oil,” she said sadly. “I’m making one last meal for my son and me.”

“Don’t be afraid,” said Elijah. “Make me a small loaf first. God says your flour and oil will not run out until the rain comes again.”

The widow trusted God and did it. Then she looked in her jar. Still flour! She tipped her jug. Still oil! Glug, glug! Every day there was enough.

Day after day, Elijah, the widow, and her son had food to eat. The jar never ran out. God takes care of us, every single day.

Talk about it

  • How does God take care of you every day?
  • How do you think the widow felt when the flour and oil kept coming?
  • Who can we share with when God gives us enough?

Pray together

Thank you, God, for giving me what I need every single day. Amen.
