A Seat at the King's Table

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

King David remembered his best friend, Jonathan. Jonathan had died, and David missed him. David asked, “Is anyone left from Jonathan’s family? I want to be kind to them.”

A servant said, “Yes, Jonathan has a son named Mephibosheth. He cannot walk, because his feet were hurt when he was little.”

“Bring him to me!” said David. Mephibosheth came to the palace, scared. He bowed low. “Why would the king want to see someone like me?”

“Don’t be afraid,” said David. “I loved your father, Jonathan. I will give you back your family’s land. And you will eat at my table every day!”

So Mephibosheth ate dinner at the king’s big table, just like one of the king’s own sons. Every single day, there was a seat just for him.

God is like that, too. He invites us to his table, no matter who we are. In God’s family, there is always a seat for you!

Talk about it

  • How can you make room for someone who feels left out?
  • How do you think Mephibosheth felt when David saved a seat for him?
  • Who could you invite to play, sit, or share with you this week?

Pray together

Dear God, thank you for a seat in your family. Help me welcome others. Amen.
