1 Samuel 18–20

Best Friends

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

After David beat Goliath, he met King Saul’s son, Prince Jonathan. Right away, Jonathan and David became best friends. Jonathan loved David like a brother.

Jonathan took off his royal robe and gave it to David. He gave David his sword, his bow and his belt, too. “Let’s be friends forever,” he said.

The two friends made a promise. They would always be kind to each other and to each other’s families. Friends forever!

Later, King Saul grew jealous and wanted to hurt David. Jonathan made a plan. “I will shoot arrows in the field. Listen to what I say to my helper.”

Jonathan shot an arrow far, far away. “The arrow is beyond you!” he called. That was the secret signal. It meant, “Run, David! It isn’t safe here.”

Before David left, the two friends hugged and cried. “God is with us both,” said Jonathan. A true friend helps you, even when it is hard.

Talk about it

  • How can you be a good friend this week?
  • What did Jonathan do to help David when it was hard?
  • Who is a friend you can be kind to today?

Pray together

Dear God, thank you for friends. Help me be a kind and true friend. Amen.
