1 Samuel 17

David and the Giant

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

The army of Israel faced their enemies, the Philistines. Every day a giant named Goliath stomped out. STOMP! STOMP! “Send someone to fight me!” he roared.

Goliath was taller than a doorway. His armor clanked. His spear was huge. King Saul and all his soldiers shook with fear. Nobody wanted to fight him.

Young David came to bring food to his brothers. He heard Goliath shouting. “Who is he to make fun of God’s army?” said David. “I will go!”

King Saul tried to give David his armor. Clank, clunk! Too big! So David took his shepherd’s staff, his sling, and five smooth stones from the stream.

Goliath laughed. But David said, “You come with a sword. I come in the name of the Lord!” David ran and swung his sling. Whirl, whirl... ZING!

The stone hit Goliath’s forehead, and down he fell with a THUD! The Philistine army ran away. God helped David. God is bigger than anything!

Talk about it

  • What is something big that makes you scared? Who can help you?
  • How did David show he trusted God?
  • What small thing did David use to do something brave?

Pray together

Dear God, you are bigger than anything. Help me be brave. Amen.
