1 Samuel 24

David Is Kind to Saul

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

King Saul was angry and jealous of David. He took soldiers and went looking for him. David and his friends hid deep inside a dark cave.

Then King Saul came into that very same cave to rest! He did not know David was there. David’s friends whispered, “Now’s your chance! Get him!”

But David said, “No. I will not hurt the king God chose.” Very quietly, David crept up and snipped off a corner of Saul’s robe. Snip!

When Saul walked out of the cave, David came out, too. He bowed low. “My king!” he called. “Look! Here is a corner of your robe.”

“I could have hurt you, but I didn’t. I will not do wrong to you.” King Saul started to cry. “David, you have been kinder to me than I was to you.”

David chose kindness, even to someone who was mean to him. That is hard! But God helps us be kind, even when others are not.

Talk about it

  • How can you be kind to someone who was not kind to you?
  • What kind choice did David make when he could have been mean?
  • Who can help you choose kindness when it feels hard?

Pray together

Dear God, help me be kind, even when others are not kind to me. Amen.
