Exodus 16–17

Bread from Heaven

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

God’s people walked into the dry desert. Sand, sand, everywhere sand! Soon their tummies rumbled. “We’re hungry!” they grumbled.

God heard them. “I will rain down bread from heaven,” he said. That evening, quail birds fluttered into camp. Flap, flap! There was meat for supper.

In the morning, the ground was covered with little white flakes, like frost. “What is it?” the people asked. They called it manna. It tasted like honey wafers!

Every morning, the people gathered just enough for that day. On the sixth day, they gathered extra, so they could rest on the seventh. God sent manna every day!

Later, they had no water. “We’re thirsty!” they cried. God told Moses, “Strike the rock with your staff.” TAP! Out gushed cool, fresh water. Gurgle, splash!

Sip, slurp, ahhh! Everyone drank, even the thirsty sheep. God took care of his people in the desert. God gives us what we need, too.

Talk about it

  • What are some good things God gives you every day?
  • How did God help his people when they were hungry and thirsty?
  • What can we say to God when we need help?

Pray together

Thank you, God, for food and water and everything I need. Amen.
