Exodus 17:8–16

Holding Up Moses' Arms

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

God’s people were traveling through the desert. One day, some enemies came to fight them. Moses said, “Joshua, lead our people. I will go up the hill.”

Moses climbed the hill with his brother Aaron and his friend Hur. He held God’s staff high up in the air. When his arms were up, God’s people did well.

But arms get tired! When Moses’ arms drooped down, down, down, things went badly. Moses needed help. What could his friends do?

Aaron and Hur had an idea. They rolled a big rock over. “Sit here, Moses!” Then Aaron held up one arm, and Hur held up the other arm.

They held his arms up, steady, steady, all day long, until the sun went down. Down in the valley, Joshua and God’s people won!

Moses built an altar to thank God. He called it The Lord Is My Banner. God helps us, and God gives us friends to help us be strong.

Talk about it

  • Who helps you when you feel tired? Who can you help?
  • How did Aaron and Hur show love to Moses?
  • What is one small helpful thing you can do for a friend today?

Pray together

Dear God, thank you for my friends. Help me hold up others when they are tired. Amen.
