Acts 9:36–42

Dorcas Gets Up

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

In the town of Joppa lived a kind woman named Dorcas. Her other name was Tabitha. She loved Jesus, and she loved to help people.

Dorcas sewed warm coats and dresses for widows and poor people. Snip, snip went her scissors. In and out went her needle. Everyone loved her.

But one day Dorcas got very sick, and she died. Her friends were so sad. They sent for Peter. “Please come quickly!”

Peter came to the house. The widows cried and showed him the coats Dorcas had made. Peter asked everyone to wait outside, and he knelt down and prayed.

Then Peter said, “Tabitha, get up.” Dorcas opened her eyes! She saw Peter and sat up. Peter took her hand and helped her stand.

Peter called her friends back in. They hugged Dorcas and cheered! News spread all over Joppa, and many people believed in Jesus.

Talk about it

  • How can you be kind and helpful like Dorcas?
  • Who did Dorcas help with her sewing?
  • What kind thing could we make, share, or do for someone this week?

Pray together

Dear God, thank you for kind people. Help my hands do kind things for others. Amen.
