Judges 6–7

Gideon's Little Army

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Gideon was hiding while he worked, because he was scared of the enemies. Then an angel appeared. “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior!” the angel said.

“Me?” said Gideon. “I’m the smallest one in my family!” But God said, “I will be with you.” Gideon wanted to be really, really sure.

He put a wool fleece on the ground. “God, if this fleece is wet and the ground is dry, I’ll know.” In the morning, the fleece was dripping wet!

Gideon had lots of soldiers, but God said, “Too many!” He sent most of them home. Only 300 were left. God wanted everyone to know he would win.

God gave the 300 men trumpets, clay jars and torches. At night they surrounded the enemy camp. Toot! Smash! “For the Lord and for Gideon!” they shouted.

The enemies got so mixed up that they all ran away! God gave Gideon a big win with a little army. When we feel small, God is big!

Talk about it

  • When do you feel small? How does God help?
  • What helped Gideon be brave when he felt unsure?
  • What small thing can you do with God’s help this week?

Pray together

Dear God, when I feel small and scared, remind me that you are with me. Amen.
