The story
God told Samuel, “Go to Bethlehem, to a man named Jesse. One of his sons will be the next king.” So Samuel went, carrying a horn of oil.
Jesse’s oldest son was tall and handsome. “Surely this is the one!” thought Samuel. But God said, “No. People look at the outside. I look at the heart.”
One by one, seven sons walked by. Seven times God said, “No, not this one.” “Do you have any more sons?” Samuel asked.
“Just the youngest,” said Jesse. “David. He’s out watching the sheep.” So they sent for him. In ran David, rosy-cheeked, with bright eyes.
“This is the one,” God said. Samuel poured oil on David’s head. Drip, drip! It meant God had chosen him. From that day, God’s Spirit was with David.
David was young. He was small. But David loved God with all his heart. God doesn’t care how big we are. God looks at our hearts.
