The story
After supper, Jesus walked with his friends to a garden full of olive trees. The moon was bright. The night was very still.
“Please pray,” Jesus told them. Then he went a little farther, knelt down, and prayed. His heart was heavy, because he knew something hard was coming.
“Father,” Jesus prayed, “if you are willing, take this hard thing away. But not what I want. What you want.” God sent an angel to make him strong.
Jesus went back to his friends. They were sound asleep! “Wake up and pray,” he said gently. “Pray that you will be strong.”
Just then, torches came bobbing through the trees. Judas, one of Jesus’ own friends, was leading soldiers to take Jesus away.
Jesus did not run. He did not fight. He went with them quietly, because he loved God and he loved us. Jesus always obeyed God.
