Luke 22:54–62

The Rooster Crows

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

On the night Jesus was taken away by soldiers, Peter followed far behind. He came into a courtyard where people warmed their hands by a fire. It was cold and dark.

A servant girl looked at Peter. “You were with Jesus!” she said. Peter was scared. “No, I don’t know him,” he said.

A little later, someone else said, “You are one of his friends!” “No, I’m not!” said Peter. Then a third person said it, and Peter said again, “I don’t know him!”

Just then, a rooster crowed. Cock-a-doodle-doo! Peter remembered what Jesus had told him: “Before the rooster crows, you will say three times that you don’t know me.”

Peter went outside and cried and cried. He was so sorry. He loved Jesus, but he had been afraid.

But this is not the end of Peter’s story. After Easter, Jesus forgave Peter and gave him a big job to do. Jesus forgives us too when we are sorry.

Talk about it

  • What can we do when we are sorry?
  • How do you think Peter felt when the rooster crowed?
  • Who can you talk to when you feel sorry or afraid?

Pray together

Dear Jesus, sometimes I am afraid and do wrong. Thank you for forgiving me. Amen.
