Luke 23; John 19

The Saddest Day

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Not everyone loved Jesus. Some leaders were angry about what he taught. They did not believe he was God’s Son, so they made a plan to get rid of him.

They took Jesus to Pilate, the Roman ruler. People told lies about Jesus. But Jesus had never done anything wrong. Not one thing!

Jesus stood quietly. He did not argue. He did not fight. Pilate said, “I find nothing wrong with this man.” But the crowd shouted, and Pilate gave in.

They put Jesus on a cross on a hill. In the middle of the day, the sky turned dark as night. Jesus’ mother, Mary, and his friend John stood nearby, so sad.

Even then, Jesus loved people. He asked God to forgive them. He asked John to take care of his mother. Then Jesus said, “It is finished,” and he died.

Jesus died on the cross for us, to take away all our wrong things. Jesus loves us that much! His friends cried. But that was not the end…

Talk about it

  • How much does Jesus love you?
  • What did Jesus do when people were unkind to him?
  • Who can you show love to when they feel sad?

Pray together

Thank you, Jesus, for loving me so much that you died for me. Amen.
