Matthew 4:1–11

Jesus Says No to Temptation

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Before Jesus started teaching, the Holy Spirit led him into the desert. For forty days and nights he stayed there, praying to his Father. He didn’t eat anything at all.

Jesus was very, very hungry. Then the tempter came and whispered, “If you are God’s Son, turn these stones into bread.” He wanted Jesus to stop trusting God.

But Jesus said no. “God’s Word says people don’t live on bread alone. We live by every word God speaks.” God’s Word made Jesus strong.

Two more times the tempter tried to trick Jesus. Each time Jesus answered with words from the Bible. “Worship God, and serve only him!”

Finally the tempter gave up and went away. Then angels came and took care of Jesus. They brought him food and comfort.

When you are tempted to do something wrong, you can say no like Jesus. Remember God’s Word, and ask God to help you.

Talk about it

  • What can you say when you are tempted to do wrong?
  • What words from God help your heart feel strong?
  • Who can you ask for help when saying no is hard?

Pray together

Dear Jesus, help me remember God’s Word and say no to wrong things. Amen.
