Matthew 1:18–25

Joseph's Dream

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Joseph was a carpenter in Nazareth. He was going to marry Mary. Then Joseph heard that Mary was going to have a baby. He didn’t understand.

Joseph was worried. He was a good man, and he wanted to be kind to Mary. But what should he do? He thought and thought until his head hurt.

That night Joseph lay down on his mat to sleep. The stars twinkled outside the window. He was still worried as his eyes slowly closed.

While Joseph slept, an angel came to him in a dream. “Joseph, don’t be afraid to marry Mary,” said the angel. “This baby is from God.”

“She will have a son, and you will name him Jesus, because he will save his people. He will be called Immanuel. That means God with us.”

When Joseph woke up, he did just what the angel said. He married Mary and took care of her. When God tells us what to do, we can obey.

Talk about it

  • What do you do when you feel worried?
  • Who helped Joseph know what to do?
  • How can we listen and obey when God shows us the kind thing to do?

Pray together

Dear God, when I feel worried, help me listen to you and obey. Amen.
