Luke 10:38–42

Mary and Martha

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Jesus came to visit his friends Martha and Mary in the town of Bethany. Martha opened the door with a big smile. “Welcome, Jesus! Come in!”

Martha rushed around the kitchen. She baked bread, chopped vegetables and stirred the soup. There was so much to do! Her face got hot, and she began to feel grumpy.

But where was her sister Mary? Mary was sitting on the floor near Jesus, listening to every word he said.

Martha put her hands on her hips. “Jesus, don’t you care that Mary left me to do all the work? Tell her to help me!”

Jesus answered kindly, “Martha, Martha, you are worried about so many things. But only one thing really matters. Mary has chosen the best thing, being with me.”

Martha took a deep breath and sat down too. Helping is good, but spending time with Jesus is the very best thing of all.

Talk about it

  • When can you sit quietly with Jesus today?
  • What do you think Mary liked about listening to Jesus?
  • What busy thing can we pause so we can be close to Jesus?

Pray together

Dear Jesus, help me slow down and spend time with you every day. Amen.
