John 12:1–8

Mary's Perfume

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

A few days before the first Easter, Jesus ate dinner in Bethany with his friends. Martha served the food, and Lazarus sat at the table with Jesus.

Then Mary came in carrying a jar of very expensive perfume. She knelt down and poured it on Jesus’ feet. She wiped his feet with her long hair.

The whole house filled with a sweet smell. Mary loved Jesus so much, she wanted to give him the most precious thing she had.

Judas grumbled. “What a waste! That perfume cost a lot of money!” Some of the others frowned too.

But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She has done a beautiful thing for me. She is getting me ready for what is going to happen soon.”

Mary showed her love for Jesus with all her heart. We can love Jesus with all our hearts too, and give him our very best.

Talk about it

  • How can you show Jesus that you love him?
  • What is something special you could share with Jesus?
  • How do you think Mary felt when Jesus spoke kindly to her?

Pray together

Dear Jesus, I love you. Help me give you my very best, with all my heart. Amen.
