Mark 12:41–44

The Widow's Two Coins

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Jesus sat in the temple near the offering box, watching people give money to God. Rich people came by in fancy clothes. Clink, clank, clang! They dropped in lots of coins.

Some of them wanted everyone to see how much they gave. They poured in handfuls of money and looked around to make sure people noticed.

Then a poor widow came quietly. She had very little money. She held out her hand and dropped in two tiny copper coins. Plink, plink.

Jesus called his friends over. “Do you see that widow? She gave more than all the rich people put together!”

His friends were surprised. “How can that be? She only gave two tiny coins!” Jesus said, “The others gave a little of what they had extra. She gave everything she had.”

God doesn’t look at how much we give. He looks at our hearts. Giving with love, even a little, makes God very glad.

Talk about it

  • What could you give to God with a happy heart?
  • Why do you think Jesus noticed the widow’s tiny gift?
  • How can we give with love, even if our gift is small?

Pray together

Dear God, everything I have comes from you. Help me give with a loving heart. Amen.
