Samuel Listens

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Hannah prayed and prayed for a baby. God gave her a son, Samuel! When he was a little boy, Samuel went to live at God’s house to help Eli the priest.

One night, Samuel was lying down near the lamp in God’s house. All was quiet. Then he heard a voice: “Samuel!”

Samuel ran to Eli. “Here I am!” “I didn’t call you,” said Eli sleepily. “Go back to bed.” This happened again... and again!

Then Eli understood. It was God calling Samuel! “If you hear the voice again,” Eli said, “say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’”

Samuel lay down. “Samuel! Samuel!” God called. This time Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” And God spoke to him.

Samuel grew up listening to God, and God was with him. We can listen to God, too, when we read the Bible and pray.

Talk about it

  • How can you listen to God?
  • What do you think Samuel felt when he heard his name?
  • When is a quiet time you can talk to God?

Pray together

Speak, Lord. I am listening. Help me hear you and obey. Amen.
