The Donkey Who Talked

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

A man named Balaam saddled his donkey and rode off to do a job God did not want him to do. Clip-clop, clip-clop down the road.

Suddenly the donkey saw an angel standing in the road! Balaam could not see the angel. The donkey turned off the road into a field.

Balaam was cross. They went on, and the donkey saw the angel again and again. The third time, the donkey just lay down. Plop! She would not move!

Then God did something amazing. He let the donkey talk! “Why are you cross with me?” she asked. “Have I ever done this before?” Balaam’s mouth fell open.

Then God opened Balaam’s eyes. He saw the angel standing in the road! Balaam bowed down low. “I was wrong,” he said. “I will listen to God.”

The donkey had kept Balaam safe all along. God can use anything to help us, even a little donkey! It is always best to listen to God.

Talk about it

  • How can you listen to God every day?
  • Who helped Balaam when he was going the wrong way?
  • Can you think of a small or surprising way God might help you?

Pray together

Dear God, open my eyes and ears, so I can listen to you. Amen.
