2 Kings 6:1–7

The Floating Axe Head

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Elisha had a group of young prophets who learned from him. “Our house is too small!” they said. “Let’s go to the river and cut trees to build a bigger one.”

Chop, chop, chop! Everyone worked hard by the Jordan River. Then one young man swung his axe, and the iron head flew right off. SPLASH! It sank into the water.

“Oh no!” he cried. “Master, it was borrowed!” In those days an axe cost a lot of money. How could he ever get it back from the deep river?

“Where did it fall?” asked Elisha. The young man pointed. Elisha cut a stick and tossed it into the water right on that spot. Plop!

Bloop! Up came the heavy iron axe head. It floated on top of the water like a leaf! “Pick it up,” said Elisha. The young man reached out and grabbed it.

Iron does not float, but God made it float! No problem is too small for God. You can tell him about the little things, too.

Talk about it

  • What is a little problem you can tell God about today?
  • Why do you think the young man told Elisha about his problem?
  • How can we remember that God cares about small things too?

Pray together

Dear God, thank you for caring about big things and little things. Amen.
