The God Who Sees Me

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Hagar was a servant in Abraham’s family. One day things went very wrong at home, and Sarah was hard on her. Hagar was so sad that she ran away into the desert.

She sat down by a little spring of water, all alone. “Nobody cares about me,” she thought. But somebody did! An angel came and called her by name. “Hagar!”

“God has heard your crying,” said the angel. “You will have a baby boy. Name him Ishmael.” Hagar smiled. “You are the God who sees me!”

Baby Ishmael was born and grew into a boy. Years later, Hagar and Ishmael had to leave home. They walked and walked in the hot, dry desert.

Soon their water was all gone. Ishmael was so thirsty. Hagar sat down and cried. But God heard the boy, and God opened Hagar’s eyes. Look! A well!

Splash! Hagar filled the water bag, and Ishmael drank and drank. God took care of them both. When we feel alone, God sees us, too.

Talk about it

  • How does it feel to know that God always sees you?
  • When Hagar felt alone, who cared about her?
  • What can you say to God when you feel sad or lonely?

Pray together

Dear God, thank you for seeing me and hearing me, even when I feel alone. Amen.
