2 Kings 4:1–7

The Oil That Kept Pouring

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

A mom came to Elisha, crying. “My husband has died, and we owe a lot of money. Now a man wants to take my two boys away to work for him!”

“What do you have in your house?” Elisha asked. “Nothing,” she said, “only one little jar of oil.” Elisha smiled. “Go and borrow empty jars from all your neighbors. Lots of them!”

Knock, knock! The two boys ran from house to house. “May we borrow your jars?” Soon jars were everywhere: big jars, small jars, tall jars and round jars.

Inside, the mom shut the door. She tipped her little jar into a big empty one. Glug, glug, glug! The oil kept pouring and pouring. It filled that jar right up!

“Another jar!” she said. Glug, glug! “Another!” Jar after jar filled up. When the very last jar was full, the oil stopped.

Elisha said, “Sell the oil, pay what you owe, and live on the rest.” Her family was safe! God sees what we need, and he provides.

Talk about it

  • What are some ways God takes care of your family?
  • How do you think the family felt when the oil kept pouring?
  • Who can we ask for help when we have a big need?

Pray together

Dear God, thank you for giving my family what we need. Amen.
