Luke 24:13–35

The Road to Emmaus

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

On the first Easter Sunday, two of Jesus’ friends walked home to a village called Emmaus. They felt very sad. They did not know yet that Jesus was alive.

A stranger came and walked beside them. “Why are you so sad?” he asked. They told him all about Jesus, and how he had died.

The stranger explained the Scriptures to them, all the way from Moses to the prophets. Their hearts felt warm as they listened. But they did not know it was Jesus!

When they reached Emmaus, they said, “Please stay with us. It is getting dark.” At dinner, the stranger took the bread, thanked God and broke it.

Suddenly they knew him. It was Jesus! He was alive! And then Jesus was gone from their sight.

They jumped up and ran all the way back to Jerusalem in the dark. “Jesus is alive! We saw him!” they told his friends. Jesus is with us too, even when we can’t see him.

Talk about it

  • How do you think the two friends felt?
  • Why do you think Jesus walked with his friends when they were sad?
  • What helps you remember that Jesus is close to you?

Pray together

Dear Jesus, thank you that you are alive and always with me. Amen.
