Daniel 5

Writing on the Wall

Open it as a pop-up book: a storyteller reads every page, with sounds, a sticker page, a prayer and a quiz at the end.

The story

Belshazzar was the new king of Babylon. He threw a giant, noisy party with a thousand guests. Music played. People laughed and ate.

Then the king did something very wrong. He drank from the golden cups taken from God’s temple. He laughed at God and praised his pretend gods instead.

Suddenly, a glowing hand appeared! It wrote strange words on the palace wall. Everyone went quiet. The king’s knees knocked together. Knock, knock, knock!

None of the king’s wise men could read the writing. Then the queen said, “Call Daniel! He is wise, and God helps him understand.”

Old Daniel came and read the message. “God has numbered your days as king. God has weighed you, and you came up short.” God is the real King!

That very night, Belshazzar’s kingdom ended, just as God had said. Kings come and go, but God rules forever. We can always trust him.

Talk about it

  • Why is God the greatest King of all?
  • What did Daniel know about God that helped him be brave?
  • How can we remember that God is King when we feel worried?

Pray together

Dear God, you are the King of everything. I want to honor you always. Amen.
